Installing Parking Sensors Aftermarket Car

I picked up my 1500 Laramie about three weeks ago and one of the features it didn't have was ParkSense so I've been looking to install an aftermarket system ever since. I do have the reverse camera but have had the audible sensors on my last four cars and gotten used to it. After searching the web I was only able to find one single manufacturer that sells chrome sensors and that is Steelmate. Cross Country Mountain Bike Training Program. Problem was that Steelmate have had some manufacturing problems at their factory and you can't get hold of their front/rear kits anywhere. Trying my luck I ordered another kit that looked similar based on pictures which was the Crimestopper CA-5020 from Amazon and the chrome sensors from another vendor (part #SM-CHRKIT2). Turns out that once I get the Crimestopper kit *it is* a Steelmate kit with a Crimestopper sticker.

The actual Steelmate part # is PTS800V8 which strangely enough is not available on their US site, only their Hong Kong site. To cut a long story short, it worked perfectly with the chrome sensors, always nice when a plan works out!

I had it installed by a car audio shop here in San Diego and it took them about 3 hours to do. They had to extend the cables to the rear of the truck as they weren't long enough but it's normal RCA cables so easy to do. The rear sensors activate when you switch to Reverse and the front sensors activate when you hit the brake pedal.

When you switch to Reverse the display will always light up but when you hit the brakes the display only light up if you're 3 feet or closer to an object in front of you. All other times the display remains off which was one of the concerns I had considering the placement of the display. When the system is activated it both beeps and a lady voice say '6 feet', '2 feet' and 'Park!' The last picture is how close I was to the wall when she announced 'Park'. Overall it works just like I had hoped and looks as good as the factory install in my opinion.

Total cost was about $300 ($160 for the system and $140 for the 8 chrome sensors). Enough talk, below are some pictures. Click to expand.I would like to ask a couple follow-up questions. It has been almost 2 years since your original post. How have the sensors performed? I just purchased the same system and chrome upgrade sensors to install on my truck. I tested the system on my dining room table just to make sure they functioned.

Everything worked as expected. The display on my unit doesn't light until you apply 12V to either the brake or backup inputs. I like that since it might be distracting if it was on all the time. That leads to my second question. When you step on the brake does it light up every time or just when it's close enough to sense something? I installed the Crimestopper CA5020 in my 2011. Also upgraded to chrome bumpers.

So far so good. The system seems accurate and there are very few false alarms when braking in drive. Time will tell how well it survives a Michigan winter. The one thing I found is the chrome sensors do not seem to be available anymore. I ended up purchasing two Chrimestopper CA5013.MBS.CTR systems just to get the chrome sensors.

As noted in the original post, the cables are too short and must be extended for the rear bumper. Since I had extra cables that was no problem. Drilling holes in chrome bumpers is tricky. Cutting oil is highly recommended, otherwise the bit gets dull quickly. Sensors After researching as much as I could on this I did the Crime Stopper Parking Assist install. I found some things that will help others out.

Crime stopper has a new version. MATT.2 From what I can tell the change it that the sensors are matt finish instead of shiny. When I spoke to Crime Stopper support they said the system is smarter. I just got the old one that is not matt. The install is time consuming but not that bad. I had to extend the wires. After running it for a month I ended up getting 2 of the Crimestopper CA-5013.MBS.C.TR kits to get the chrome sensors.

If you are going to do this order them at the some time and save yourself some trouble. It makes extending the wires easier.

The chrome sensors are larger than the black ones. I had to buy a step drill bit to open the holes.

It is much easier to just drill the right holes. This is the kit I got to enlarge the holes. They need to be 1 inch. This kit worked well and is worth getting.

One reason I got the chrome sensors is that I read they are meant for metal bumpers and work better than the smaller black ones. Another things I found is the black ones are angled so you have to mess with aiming them to not get false positives. The Chrome sensors are flat. They work perfect with the chrome Big Horn bumpers on my 2014 1500 4x4. I just installed the chrome sensors last night. How To Block Adobe Activation Cs5 Windows 7.

They seem to work much better. I will add some pictures and write more details about how they work over time. Another thing I did was wire my parking assist to a switch that I put in the dash so I can turn it when I don't want it. I had been getting too many false readings. Plus I didn't want to have it go off when I have a trailer on.
